Signs and symptoms of complex trauma
Complex trauma is not yet its own line in every diagnostic manual, but more and more clinicians, including ours, use a six-part framework alongside the standard signs of PTSD.
Trouble managing big feelings.
Emotions come on fast, stay a long time, or do not show up at all. It is hard to feel calm again once you are upset.
Trouble knowing who you are.
A steady sense of being broken, bad, or different from other people. Trouble saying what you actually want.
Trouble in relationships.
Trust feels hard. Conflict feels dangerous. Being close to someone feels risky. You may find yourself drawn to people who repeat old pain.
Feeling far from your own life.
Feeling outside your body, or watching yourself from a distance. Gaps in time you cannot fully account for.
Symptoms in the body.
Ongoing tension, pain, stomach trouble, or tiredness. The body often holds what the mind cannot put into words.
Reliving the past and staying on guard.
The same signs as PTSD: memories that come back uninvited, being jumpy, and trouble sleeping.
If any of this sounds familiar, it counts as therapy for trauma symptoms, even if you cannot name a single moment that caused it.
