Online therapy Ontario

Online therapy in Ottawa

Saalvio is a virtual practice serving Ottawa. Our clinical team is registered in Ontario, accepting new clients, and the first session is free. Ottawa is a bilingual city; for now we practise in English (with Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto available with specific therapists), and we are honest about that.

Online therapy in Ottawa, in plain terms

Ottawa is the federal capital, a major tech and research centre, a university city, and a bilingual region all at once. People here have specific contexts that shape the kind of help they need: working in a public service that is under constant scrutiny, dealing with security-cleared work that cannot be talked about openly, raising kids who are growing up in two languages, or carrying the unique weight of a city that lived through the convoy in 2022 and has not fully reconciled with what that did to it.

Therapy with Saalvio in Ottawa happens over secure video. You can fit a session into a lunch break in the ByWard Market, an evening in Barrhaven, or a Saturday morning in Westboro. The work is the same; you do not need to clear a parking spot or budget travel time.

Our clinicians are registered psychotherapists and registered social workers in Ontario. The work is held to the same regulatory standards as any in-person therapy. The first session is free and there is no obligation to continue.

Common reasons people in Ottawa seek therapy

A few patterns show up often in our work with Ottawa clients.

  • Public service burnout. The combination of meaningful work, high public scrutiny, slow institutional change, and a culture of "keep your head down" wears people down. Our clinical team has experience holding the specific shape of public-sector burnout without minimising it as just another job.

  • Security-cleared work and the things you cannot say. Therapy still works when there are topics you cannot discuss; your therapist is bound by confidentiality, and we can work around classified specifics by focusing on the impact on you rather than the content of the work.

  • Parenting stress in dual-career federal households where both partners are running on full schedules and the kids are caught in the middle.

  • Anxiety and depression in adult children of public servants who grew up in Ottawa and are now figuring out what their own life looks like.

  • Post-2022 community grief. Many Ottawa residents are still processing what the convoy occupation did to their sense of home. We work with that honestly; we will not pretend it is over.

  • Postpartum mental health, especially in households where one or both parents are working long, unpredictable hours at a federal department or a tech company.

Community and language

Ottawa is bilingual and increasingly multicultural. Our clinical team works with that, with some honest limits.

For now, our sessions happen in English, with Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto available with specific therapists. We do not currently offer therapy in French. Many Ottawa residents are bilingual and choose to do therapy in English by preference; if working in French is essential for you, we will tell you that and (where we can) point you to a francophone provider we trust. French-language therapy is on our Phase 2 roadmap.

Ottawa's growing communities (Somali, Eritrean, Lebanese, Filipino, and many more) deserve therapy that takes their cultural context seriously. Our cultural fluency is strongest in the South Asian context. For other communities, we will be honest about whether we are the right match or whether someone else would serve you better.

Insurance and fees

Ottawa-area extended health benefits include some of the strongest mental health coverage in the country. The federal Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP) covers up to $5,000 per year for sessions with a registered psychotherapist or registered social worker, which is well above the typical private plan.

Most large Ottawa employers (federal departments, Shopify, the universities, the hospitals) carry plans that reimburse for both registered psychotherapists and registered social workers. Check your specific plan; Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Green Shield, and Desjardins all support both categories on most plans.

Saalvio does not direct-bill in Phase 1. We issue receipts that work with PSHCP and other major plans. The first session is free.

Your first session is free under CANADAHEALS, Saalvio's standing public health commitment to Canadian mental health. Saalvio does not bill insurers directly; we send a detailed receipt for you to submit to your extended health plan.

Therapy approaches that help

These are the evidence-based approaches our clinical team uses most often. Your therapist will pick the right fit for what you are bringing in.

Common questions

Can I do my session in French?

Not currently. We practise in English (with Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto available with specific therapists). French-language therapy is on our Phase 2 roadmap. If French is essential for you, tell us and we will point you to a francophone provider we trust.

I work in a security-cleared role. Can I still do therapy?

Yes. Many of our Ottawa clients do. Your therapist is bound by regulator confidentiality, and we focus on the impact on you rather than the classified content of your work. If a topic is off-limits, we work around it.

I have PSHCP. How does that work?

You pay the session fee up front and submit the receipt to Canada Life (the PSHCP administrator) for reimbursement. Our receipts include the regulator name and registration number that PSHCP requires.

I am a public servant. Will my employer find out I am in therapy?

No. Your insurance claim is confidential and not shared with your employer. Saalvio is a private provider; nothing about your sessions goes to your employer unless you tell them.

I have been struggling since the convoy. Is that still a real thing to bring to therapy?

Yes. Three years on, many Ottawa residents are still processing what that period did to their sense of safety in their own city. Therapy is a reasonable place to work on it.
