Online therapy Ontario

Online therapy in Waterloo

Saalvio is a virtual practice serving the City of Waterloo. Our clinical team is registered in Ontario, accepting new clients, and the first session is free.

Online therapy in Waterloo, in plain terms

Waterloo is a small city with an outsized footprint. The University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier together bring tens of thousands of students through the city each year, and the tech sector around Uptown gives the city a year-round buzz that does not always slow down in the summer.

Therapy with Saalvio in Waterloo happens over secure video. You can do a session from your residence, your apartment near Laurier, or your house in Lakeshore. Sessions fit around lectures, co-op work terms, and the rest of life.

Our clinicians are registered psychotherapists and registered social workers in Ontario. The first session is free and there is no obligation to continue.

  • Uptown Waterloo
  • Westmount
  • Lakeshore
  • Beechwood

Common reasons people in Waterloo seek therapy

A few patterns come up often in our work with Waterloo clients.

  • Student mental health. University of Waterloo and Laurier together create a particular kind of pressure: rigorous programs, co-op cycles that move you in and out of town twice a year, and competitive cultures around grades and job offers.

  • Loneliness during co-op or international moves. Living somewhere new for four months at a time, with most of your social network back where you started, wears on people.

  • Anxiety and depression that started in high school and never got addressed.

  • Tech worker burnout, especially in early-career engineers and product managers whose first three years out of school have been intense.

  • Family expectations and identity work in second-generation students who feel pulled between parents' expectations and their own life.

Community and language

Waterloo's student population is global. Our clinical team works with that with some honest limits.

Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto are available with specific therapists on our team. For other languages, ask and we will tell you honestly whether the right match is on our team or with another provider.

You do not need to do therapy in your first language. Many of our clients do not. The work fits the language you are most comfortable working in.

Insurance and fees

Most Waterloo employers and student health plans (University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier, Conestoga) reimburse for sessions with registered psychotherapists and registered social workers. Check the per-year coverage limit on your plan.

For students on tighter budgets, we hold subsidised sliding-scale spots. The first session is always free regardless of coverage.

Saalvio does not direct-bill in Phase 1. We issue receipts that work with most major plans.

Your first session is free under CANADAHEALS, Saalvio's standing public health commitment to Canadian mental health. Saalvio does not bill insurers directly; we send a detailed receipt for you to submit to your extended health plan.

Therapy approaches that help

These are the evidence-based approaches our clinical team uses most often. Your therapist will pick the right fit for what you are bringing in.

Common questions

I am on co-op in another city. Can I still see my Saalvio therapist?

Yes, as long as you are still in Ontario for the session itself. Many of our clients move around Ontario for school, work, or co-op terms and continue with the same therapist over secure video.

Is therapy covered by my student plan?

Usually, yes. Most University of Waterloo and Laurier student health plans cover registered psychotherapists and social workers for at least some sessions per year. Check with your student union; our receipts work with most plans.

I have never been to therapy. What is the first session like?

You and your therapist will talk about what is going on for you and what you would like to be different. There is no homework, no diagnosis pushed on you, and no obligation to continue. The first session is free.

What if I feel worse after starting therapy?

It happens. Sometimes putting things into words for the first time is hard. Tell your therapist; the work is supposed to be paced to what you can hold. If something is not right, we will adjust.
