Online therapy Ontario

Online therapy in Thunder Bay

Saalvio is a virtual practice serving Thunder Bay and the surrounding region. Our clinical team is registered in Ontario, accepting new clients, and the first session is free.

Online therapy in Thunder Bay, in plain terms

Thunder Bay sits at the head of Lake Superior, a long way from the rest of Ontario and a long way from itself in many ways. It has a long forestry and shipping history, deep Finnish, Italian, and Ukrainian roots, and a large and culturally distinct Indigenous population. Specialist care can mean travel. Winters are long.

Therapy with Saalvio in Thunder Bay happens over secure video. The work is the same as in-person therapy elsewhere in Ontario; we are honest about what we are and what we are not.

Our clinicians are registered psychotherapists and registered social workers in Ontario. The first session is free.

Serving clients across Thunder Bay, including:

  • Port Arthur
  • Fort William
  • Westfort
  • Current River
  • County Park
  • Northwood
  • Intercity
  • Vickers Heights
  • Slate River
  • Neebing

Common reasons people in Thunder Bay seek therapy

A few patterns come up often in our work with Thunder Bay clients.

  • Isolation, especially in winter. Distance from extended family in southern Ontario or other provinces.

  • Anxiety and depression that has been silently carried for years because reaching out has often meant a long wait or a long drive.

  • Substance use, especially alcohol, that has become a way to manage and is not stopping.

  • Healthcare worker burnout at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and across the regional system.

  • Forestry, mining, and shipping job stress, including shift work and the toll it takes.

Community and language

Thunder Bay has long-standing European-heritage communities and a large Indigenous population. Our clinical team works with that with significant limits we are honest about.

Indigenous clients across the Thunder Bay region deserve care that takes their cultural context seriously, including the history of residential schools, intergenerational trauma, and the relationship with the healthcare system. Our cultural fluency in Indigenous contexts is limited. Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, Anishnawbe Mushkiki, the Aboriginal Health Access Centre, and other Indigenous-led organisations may be a better match for some clients; we will say so honestly when that is the case.

We do not currently offer therapy in any Indigenous language. We are honest about that and we point clients to community-rooted services where we can.

Insurance and fees

Most Thunder Bay employers carry extended health benefits that reimburse for registered psychotherapists and registered social workers. The hospital, the school boards, Confederation College, and Lakehead University all carry plans with mental health coverage.

For Indigenous clients, the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program may cover mental health counselling with eligible providers; check your status and ask whoever administers your benefits.

Saalvio does not direct-bill in Phase 1. We issue receipts after each session. The first session is free.

Your first session is free under CANADAHEALS, Saalvio's standing public health commitment to Canadian mental health. Saalvio does not bill insurers directly; we send a detailed receipt for you to submit to your extended health plan.

Therapy approaches that help

These are the evidence-based approaches our clinical team uses most often. Your therapist will pick the right fit for what you are bringing in.

Common questions

I am Indigenous. Is Saalvio the right place for me?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. We are honest about it: our cultural fluency in Indigenous contexts is limited. Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, Anishnawbe Mushkiki, and other Indigenous-led organisations may be a better match. Talk to us; if we are not right, we will say so and (where we can) help you find someone who is.

Specialist care here has a long wait. Is therapy a substitute?

Therapy is not a substitute for a psychiatric assessment or medication management. Saalvio does not provide either. Therapy is its own thing and often what people need while they wait (or independently).

Will the internet hold up for a session up here?

Usually yes. When something goes wrong, we can move to phone or reschedule. We will not charge you for an outage outside your control.

I work shifts at the mill or the shipyard. Can therapy fit?

Yes. We offer evening and weekend slots. Tell us your pattern when you contact us.
