Online therapy Ontario

Online therapy in Markham

Saalvio is a virtual practice serving Markham and the rest of York Region. Our clinical team is registered in Ontario, accepting new clients, and the first session is free.

Online therapy in Markham, in plain terms

Markham is one of the most diverse cities in Canada and home to one of the largest Chinese Canadian populations in the country. The city has grown quickly, IBM Canada has long had a major presence here, and the South Asian community has grown alongside the East Asian one over the last twenty years.

Therapy with Saalvio in Markham happens over secure video. You can do a session from your house in Cornell, your apartment in Unionville, or your kitchen in Cathedraltown. No drive to a clinic, no community run-ins.

Our clinicians are registered psychotherapists and registered social workers in Ontario. The first session is free and you can switch therapists at any time.

Serving clients across Markham, including:

  • Unionville
  • Cornell
  • Markham Village
  • Cathedraltown
  • Berczy Village
  • Wismer Commons
  • Box Grove
  • Greensborough
  • Milliken Mills
  • Thornhill

Common reasons people in Markham seek therapy

A few patterns come up often in our work with Markham clients.

  • Family pressure and academic expectation, especially in East Asian and South Asian households where the path through school, university, and career has been laid out from a very young age.

  • Intergenerational tension between immigrant parents and their Canadian-born or Canadian-raised children. The conversation about who you marry, what career you take, and how much you owe your parents.

  • Tech worker burnout. Markham's tech sector around Highway 7 and IBM Canada is large, and the long-hours culture takes a real toll.

  • Anxiety and depression that has been silently carried for years because mental health has historically been a private topic in the family.

  • Postpartum mental health in new parents who are physically far from grandparents or whose grandparents are deeply involved with different expectations.

Community and language

Markham is a multicultural city with deep East Asian and South Asian communities. Our clinical team takes cultural context seriously without making it the only thing we are about.

Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto are available with specific therapists on our team. We do not currently have therapists who work in Mandarin or Cantonese on our team. If working in a Chinese language is essential for you, we will tell you that and (where we can) point you to someone we trust.

Family-aware therapy means we take your family system seriously as part of your life. For many Markham clients, family is not optional and the work is about navigation, not separation.

Insurance and fees

Most Markham employers (including IBM, the tech sector around Highway 7, and the City of Markham itself) carry extended health benefits that reimburse for registered psychotherapists and registered social workers.

Some plans treat psychotherapy and social work as separate categories with separate limits. If your plan splits them, our clinical team has both kinds of regulated professional so we can often find a therapist whose registration matches what your plan covers best.

Saalvio does not direct-bill in Phase 1. We issue receipts after each session. The first session is free.

Your first session is free under CANADAHEALS, Saalvio's standing public health commitment to Canadian mental health. Saalvio does not bill insurers directly; we send a detailed receipt for you to submit to your extended health plan.

Therapy approaches that help

These are the evidence-based approaches our clinical team uses most often. Your therapist will pick the right fit for what you are bringing in.

Common questions

Can I do my session in Mandarin or Cantonese?

Not currently. We work in English, with Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto available with specific therapists. If a Chinese language is essential for you, we will tell you and (where we can) point you to someone we trust.

My parents do not believe in therapy. Can I still come?

Yes. Many of our Markham clients started therapy without telling their parents. Some eventually do, on their own timeline. That choice is yours.

I feel guilty wanting things my parents did not have.

That is a real and recurring theme in our work with second-generation clients. Therapy is a reasonable place to work on it.

Will my therapist understand the pressure of being the "successful" child in the family?

Yes. Our clinical team works with this often. We will not minimise it as "just family stuff".
