MBCT Therapy in Ontario

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) combines mindfulness meditation with the tools of cognitive therapy to help people who have been through depression before recognize the early signs of a relapse and respond to them differently. It is delivered virtually across Ontario by Saalvio's Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers, all in good standing with their regulatory college. Saalvio operates under PHIPA (Ontario) and PIPEDA (federal Canada). Sessions are currently available across Ontario, with a full year of the Saalvio app free for every Canadian under CANADAHEALS.

What is MBCT?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) was developed by researchers Zindel Segal, Mark Williams, and John Teasdale to help people who have recovered from depression stay well. It works by pairing mindfulness practice, paying attention to the present moment on purpose, without judgment, with the practical skills of cognitive therapy, noticing unhelpful thought patterns before they take hold.

Think of it like a smoke detector for the mind. Ordinary cognitive therapy teaches you to put out a fire once it has started. MBCT teaches you to notice the smoke early enough that the fire never has to happen at all.

MBCT is usually taught in a structured format, often described in the research literature as an eight-week program, combining guided meditation, body awareness, and short cognitive exercises. A Saalvio therapist trained in MBCT will adapt the pacing to what an individual client actually needs, rather than applying a rigid script.

MBCT is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care, and it is not a crisis intervention. It is one evidence-based approach among several that Saalvio's clinical team offers.

Who MBCT helps

MBCT was built specifically around relapse prevention, but Saalvio's therapists also draw on it for related patterns of overthinking and emotional overwhelm.

What a session looks like

A typical MBCT session with a Saalvio therapist includes a guided mindfulness practice, a check-in on the week, and a short cognitive exercise connecting what came up in the meditation to real patterns in daily life. Sessions are virtual, delivered securely through the Saalvio app or the web client portal at client.saalvio.com. The number of sessions varies by client and is agreed between the client and their therapist. Many people who use MBCT for relapse prevention work with their therapist over several weeks to build the skills before spacing sessions out.

  1. Guided mindfulness practice

Your therapist leads a short mindfulness meditation or body-awareness exercise, so you practise paying attention to the present moment on purpose, without judgment.

  2. Check-in on the week

You and your therapist review what showed up between sessions: mood shifts, early warning signs, and which practices you used when things got hard.

  3. Cognitive exercise

A short cognitive exercise connects what came up in the meditation to real patterns in daily life, so the skill transfers outside the session.

Saalvio therapists who use MBCT

Saalvio's clinical team includes Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers trained in MBCT alongside CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy), and other evidence-based approaches. The team is multilingual, with sessions currently available in English, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto, so a client can ask for help in the language they actually think and feel in, not just the one they learned at school. Message a therapist who speaks your language.

Between sessions, Thrive, Saalvio's AI companion, is available in the app as a self-guided complement to the mindfulness skills a client is building in therapy. Thrive is not a clinician, not a form of therapy, and not a crisis service.

Common questions

What is MBCT therapy?

MBCT, or mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, combines mindfulness meditation with cognitive therapy techniques to help people notice early warning signs of a depressive relapse and respond before those signs take hold. It was developed by researchers Zindel Segal, Mark Williams, and John Teasdale and is often taught over an eight-week structured program.

What conditions is MBCT used for?

MBCT has the strongest evidence base for preventing relapse in people who have had two or more episodes of depression. Saalvio's therapists also draw on MBCT-related mindfulness skills for anxiety, overthinking, and stress.

How many MBCT sessions will I need?

The number of sessions is agreed between you and your therapist based on your goals. Many clients build core skills over several weeks before spacing sessions further apart. You can ask a Saalvio therapist about typical pacing before you book.

Is MBCT therapy covered by insurance in Ontario?

Saalvio does not bill insurers directly. You pay at the time of your session and receive a detailed receipt with your clinician's name, college, and registration number. Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker are typically reimbursable under most Canadian extended health benefit plans, though coverage varies by plan. See pricing details and learn how reimbursement works.

Is MBCT available outside Ontario?

Live therapy sessions, including MBCT, are currently offered in Ontario, with expansion underway across Canada. The Saalvio app, including Thrive and the self-guided mindfulness tools, is available across North America.
