About Saalvio

Why Saalvio exists

Saalvio started in 2021 in a Vaughan living room, around the kind of question a lot of families were carrying at the time: where does someone turn when they are anxious, isolated, burned out, or grieving, and the wait for a therapist is six months long?

Our answer was to build a Canadian organization that takes mental health seriously, treats people with respect, and meets them where they actually live. That means evening and weekend hours. That means therapy in English, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Pashto. That means a free first session under the standing CANADAHEALS public health commitment, so the cost of trying is zero. And it means a set of wellness tools for the days between sessions, or for people who are not ready for therapy yet: Thrive AI, our CBT chatbot, plus a guided self-help library inside the Saalvio mobile app.

We are a small organization on purpose. Every clinician on our roster is a regulated talk-therapy professional, either a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Social Worker. Every page about mental health on this site is reviewed by a member of that clinical team before it goes live. Every form submission is handled under privacy rules we can explain on one page.

A note on the name: where Saalvio comes from, and what it means.

Our clinical scope

Saalvio offers talk therapy through clinicians regulated to provide it in Ontario: Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers. We do not employ physicians, psychiatrists, or psychologists, and we do not diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, or perform psychiatric assessments. If you need any of those, your family doctor or a walk-in clinic is the right starting point. We are happy to coordinate with them.

Individual people on our team may hold additional personal credentials. Those credentials are listed in their own bios below, because they are factual. They do not change what Saalvio is: a registered psychotherapy practice with a CBT chatbot (Thrive AI) and a separate set of wellness tools (guided CBT self-help, calming music, cognitive games) alongside it.

  • Licensed virtual therapy in Ontario today, with staged expansion to other Canadian provinces and the United States.
  • Thrive AI, our CBT chatbot, available across Canada and the United States inside the Saalvio mobile app. How Thrive AI works
  • A guided self-help library (mood tracking, journaling, cognitive-behavioural exercises, structured self-assessments, sleep tools, calming music, cognitive games) inside the Saalvio mobile app on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
  • Educational content open to everyone, anywhere.

How Saalvio works as a platform

Saalvio is one platform with three modules. Self-help tools for what you do on your own time. Thrive AI for when you want to talk something through with a multilingual CBT chatbot. Licensed virtual therapy with one of our clinicians for the work that needs a real person.

Messaging connects the three modules. Before you book a therapy session, you can write to any therapist on our roster with the questions you would reasonably want answered first. Pre-booking messaging is free under CANADAHEALS, with no commitment. After you have started therapy, messaging stays open with the therapist you have booked, for brief clarifications between sessions. It is not therapy by text, and it is not crisis support. How messaging works

CANADAHEALS is the standing public health commitment that shapes the way Saalvio does business. It opens two doors. The first is the app year: one full year of any paid Saalvio app plan, free, by code. The second is care: every Canadian's first therapy session with a Saalvio clinician is free, and pre-booking messaging with any therapist on our roster is free and carries no commitment. The people behind Saalvio

Saalvio is a team, not three founders. The three of us who started it are introduced below. The rest of the clinical team appears on our therapist directory.

Zafer Z. Khan

Co-Founder

Zafer Z. Khan is a co-founder of Saalvio, a Canadian digital mental health platform launched in 2021 with Registered Psychotherapist Usman Khan and business leader Malik Mubashir Ahmed. Saalvio combines licensed virtual psychotherapy with Thrive AI, a CBT chatbot, and a separate set of wellness products (guided CBT self-help tools, calming music, and cognitive games) serving users across North America.

A technology leader by training, with more than two decades building software products, Zafer co-founded Saalvio after watching the post-pandemic mental health crisis unfold in his own community. He kept seeing the same thing everywhere he looked: friends, family, and neighbours quietly carrying anxiety, isolation, burnout, and grief, with nowhere to turn that felt safe, human, and free of judgment.

Zafer is also the founder and Director of ICA, a registered Ontario nonprofit he has owned and led since 2019, focused on programming and support for older adults. During the pandemic, he led an ICA initiative that taught hundreds of seniors to use technology for the first time, many of whom never imagined they would. That work shaped a belief that now runs through Saalvio: mental wellness is a right, not a privilege, and healing can begin with a conversation rather than a prescription.

Usman Khan

Co-Founder and Clinical Director

MD, MPH, MACP, RP (CRPO #13456)

Usman Khan is a Co-Founder of Saalvio and serves as the platform's Clinical Director. He brings a rare combination of medical training, public health perspective, and clinical psychotherapy expertise to his work with clients. Trained as a medical doctor at All Saints University School of Medicine, with a Master of Public Health from Western University and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, Usman is a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.

Usman works primarily with adolescents and adults, focusing on anxiety, trauma, grief, depression, and the emotional aftermath of medical events. His approach is practical and grounded in evidence-based methods, with a strong interest in culturally and spiritually informed care. He provides therapy in English, Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi, which makes his practice accessible to clients across diverse South Asian communities in Canada.

Beyond clinical practice, Usman leads Saalvio's clinical governance, including the editorial review of all health content published on Saalvio's website. He believes that mental healing can begin with a conversation rather than a prescription, and that the best care is rooted in trust, cultural understanding, and the client's own pace.

Malik Mubashir Ahmed

Co-Founder

Malik Mubashir Ahmed is a Co-Founder of Saalvio. He brings twenty-five years of leadership experience across marketing, entrepreneurship, sales, and business operations, combined with deep expertise in human resources and financial management. His focus inside Saalvio is on building the company as both a sustainable business and a purpose-led organization.

From 2001 to 2014, Malik held leadership roles in sales and merchandising at established enterprises, building the operational discipline that now shapes the way Saalvio scales. Since 2014, he has run his own businesses as an entrepreneur, with a focus on organizations that combine commercial sustainability with genuine service to communities.

Beyond his commercial work, Malik has spent years in volunteer humanitarian work, contributing to community initiatives in different capacities. That dual focus on commercial execution and human impact makes him a natural fit for our mission of making mental wellness a right rather than a privilege.

Your data, your story

Privacy at Saalvio is built in three layers, one for each module of the platform. Each layer is shaped by what kind of information sits in it, who is allowed to see it, and what law applies.

Layer 1: Self-help data in the Saalvio app
Mood entries, journal notes, exercise progress, sleep logs. Held on encrypted servers under your Saalvio account. Not sold. Not used to train AI. You can delete your account, and the data goes with it.
Layer 2: Thrive AI conversations
Encrypted in transit and at rest. Not used to train models. Because Thrive AI relies on US infrastructure, that layer runs under HIPAA-aligned safeguards with signed Business Associate Agreements. The per-jurisdiction posture is documented in detail on the Thrive AI privacy page.
Layer 3: Therapy sessions, structured self-assessments, and messaging
Clinical records held under PHIPA in Ontario and PIPEDA across Canada, with HIPAA-aligned safeguards where US infrastructure is involved. Messages between you and your therapist stay between the two of you; Saalvio staff do not read them. The same professional confidentiality that applies in a booked session applies in messaging.

See the full Privacy Policy for the legal details, or Security and Compliance for the technical safeguards.
