Why there are so Many ways to help: Understanding therapy techniques in Ontario

No two people carry the same weight. What quiets one person's racing mind might not reach someone else at all. That is why Saalvio's clinical team works with more than one approach to therapy.

Some approaches are built for thoughts that will not stop. Some are built for feelings so big they feel impossible to hold. Some are built for a memory that will not let go. Below, you can read about each one in plain words: what it is, who it tends to help, and what the research says.

You do not need to know which one is right for you before you start. That is our job. Yours is just to reach out.

How to pick an approach

There is no single right answer. The same person can benefit from different approaches at different points in their life. Two principles help most people:

  1. Start with the concern, not the approach. What you are working on matters more than which therapy you pick. Our therapists draw on several approaches and will adapt what they use to what you bring.
  2. Pay attention to fit. Research consistently shows that the relationship between you and your therapist matters as much as the technique. If something feels off after a session or two, tell your therapist or switch. Your first session starts with a free 30-minute consultation for that reason.

Which therapy is right for you? Explore our approaches

We currently write about 8 approaches used by our clinical team. Most of our therapists are trained in more than one, and many sessions blend two or three, depending on what you bring that day. Our therapy approaches comparison helps you understand the different methods and how they may support your individual needs.

ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on developing psychological flexibility through values-based action, so that difficult thoughts and feelings no longer determine what you do with your life.

How well it's studied
Recognized as a first-line treatment for anxiety, depression, burnout, and chronic pain.
How long it usually takes
Brief interventions of 6 to 8 sessions for specific concerns; several months for longer-standing or complex difficulties.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

A structured therapy that helps your brain finish processing a hard memory. It uses guided eye movements, or a similar back-and-forth motion, to help your mind do the work it could not finish at the time.

How well it's studied
Strong research for trauma and difficult memories. The World Health Organization recommends it for PTSD.
How long it usually takes
6 to 12 sessions for one recent hard event, longer for memories that go back further.

IFS (Internal Family Systems)

A talk therapy built on one idea: your mind has different parts. IFS, also called parts work, helps you get to know those parts instead of fighting them.

How well it's studied
Growing. The U.S. National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (NREPP) has listed Internal Family Systems as an evidence-based approach for depression, anxiety, and stress-related body symptoms since 2015.
How long it usually takes
Most people meet for 12 to 30 sessions. Trauma work can take longer.

Meet our clinical team

Every therapist on the Saalvio team is a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Social Worker, in good standing with their college. Many are trained in more than one approach, so your sessions can shift with what you need, session to session.

What it costs

Your first 30 minutes is a free consultation. This is part of CANADAHEALS, our promise that the first step into care should never cost you anything.

After that free consultation, sessions run between $100 and $150 CAD, agreed between you and your therapist. Saalvio does not bill your insurance company directly. You pay at the time of your session and get a detailed receipt with your therapist's name, college, and registration number. Most Canadian extended health plans typically reimburse psychotherapy sessions, though coverage is different for every plan, so it's worth checking with your provider first.

You can also message a therapist with pricing questions before you book anything.

Frequently asked questions

What approaches do you cover?

We currently write about eight approaches: CBT, DBT, ACT, MBCT, EMDR, IFS, Exposure Therapy, and ERP. All are delivered online by Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers across Ontario.

Do I have to choose an approach before I book a session?

No. Our clinical team helps you find the right fit once you tell them what you are going through. You never have to figure this out alone.

Can I ask a therapist about their approach before I book?

Yes. You can message any therapist on our team with your questions, free, with no commitment. Ask about their approach, their experience, or anything else that would help you decide.

What if an approach or therapist is not a good fit?

Tell your therapist, or message our team, and we will help you find a better fit. This is exactly why the first 30 minutes is a free consultation: so you can find out what works before anything costs you.

What if I am having thoughts of hurting myself?

Saalvio is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911. If you are in mental health crisis, please call 988 (the Suicide Crisis Helpline of Canada) or visit your nearest emergency department.
