Abdul Sami Sheikh

Mental Health & Addiction Student | Former Program Assistant at IRCC | Writer

Abdul Sami Sheikh’s understanding of mental health accessibility is built from the ground up. His perspective, both in writing and in life in general, is shaped by over three years of direct, hands-on experience supporting vulnerable populations. He has provided care to adults with developmental disabilities and also helped newcomers to Canada navigate a complex system and make sense of it all.

His varied professional experience informs what he writes and how he goes about dealing with people of diverse backgrounds. In his role at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), he administered citizenship tests and served as a certified interpreter in Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi to ensure individuals were understood during critical moments. This unique experience at the intersection of public service and client advocacy gives his writing on mental health and cultural competency a credible, real-world context.

He is currently furthering his formal education in a Mental Health and Addiction program, seeking to bridge his frontline insights with advanced clinical knowledge. His writing aims to translate this blend of experience and theory into practical guidance, advocating for practices that are not only effective but also culturally and linguistically respectful.

In his free time, you will find him playing the gentleman’s game of cricket or listening to music, which he swears by as a therapeutic tool.
