Teenagers are often seen slamming a door, raising their voice, or shutting down after an argument or a stressful situation, and it is quite normal during these years because anger is a normal emotion. But many teenagers often struggle with anger management. If you are a teen or a parent of a teen, you are not alone, and there are various effective anger management strategies that we will discuss briefly.

Anger in Teens

Anger in teens is usually due to academic stress, peer pressure, or family issues. Occasional frustration is common, but unmanaged anger can impact relationships negatively, lower self-esteem and affect physical health.

Common misconceptions include “Teens will grow out of it”, “it’s just hormonal changes”, “they’re just being dramatic”, but in reality, with the right anger management skills, teens can easily express their emotions and communicate in healthy ways.

Teenager Anger Management

The first step of managing anger in teens is awareness. Teens should observe and note their triggers. These triggers could be anything, such as feeling misunderstood, feeling pressured or stressed at school or about friends. Identification of the triggers helps them react more thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

Practical anger management skills for teens include the following;

  • Practicing breathing techniques to calm down
  • Time-outs: Step away from the situation before reacting to it
  • Use of “I” statements for expressing feelings without any blame or guilt
  • Explore different healthy habits such as sports, art, or journaling

How to Control Anger as a Teenager

Including healthy daily habits in your life can help in managing anger.

  • Keeping an eye on early signs of anger, i.e. tightening of muscles, faster heartbeat, and a flushed face.
  • Take a deep breath and a moment to think and respond.
  • Choose better ways to communicate rather than yelling or shutting down completely.
  • Ask yourself, “How is the other person feeling?” Practising empathy makes it easier to control your anger.
